TEACH FLEET inspires K-8 students to consider STEM careers, particularly maritime and environmental science, engineering, and related technology. The TEACH FLEET collection has all types of modern ships, but each one has a different purpose representing every area of STEM. LEGO ship models range in size from 2 feet to 6 feet long and can be used as teaching aids to introduce students to STEM, history, and diversity. Each ship is named for a female or minority inventor, scientist, physician, engineer, mathematician’s, military officer, or explorer. The ships are displayed with placards featuring a portrait and biography of its namesake.

The TEACH FLEET was built entirely by Wilbert McKinley, a former ship designer for naval architecture firms and shipyards. The TEACH FLEET started as an act of desperation when Wilbert was faced with the task of teaching 30 elementary and middle school students in an after-school program . He was forced to improvise so he started buying recycled Lego style building blocks to build ships and airplanes as teaching aids for his class about transportation.

I’m so excited to go on the field trip. I want to build a boat.
I think what you did is cool. I might go home and make coast guard ships and show a picture online and let everybody see what I have created and see if anybody likes it!
Hi Amare. I hope you do make a coast guard ship or something. We can set up a display area. I really like your post. You’re doing great.
I can not wait to meet him. I can not believe he made 200 ships in three years and he named all his ships after accomplished people.
I cannot wait to meet Mr. McKinley too. He is very accomplished too. Ask him about his career when you meet him. Great post!
I can’t what to met Wilbert McKinley and his Lego Ships.
I can’t wait to see this amazing man =). I just imagine just building all those Modern ships with my bare hands.
Hi Terrence, with your imagination great things are possible. Ask Mr. McKinley what his imagination and vision helped him to do.
I can’t wait to meet this guy. He sounds really cool. I have a lot of questions to ask him and I hope to learn more about him and his amazing ships.
Yes Jahvarie. We can learn a lot from Mr. McKinley. Prepare a couple of questions to ask him.
Great post.
